Mark Schultz

Biography

“I have been interested in community living for many years, and have practiced it to one extent or another both at home and abroad. Many of my real desires in this life, to come to fruition, depend upon the hands and good energies of others, working toward the same or similar ends: community agriculture, making music, caring for animals, working with alternative energy sources and living habits — if they don’t rely entirely on the help of others, they certainly are made beautiful and relevant with company. ‘Do you remember? Do you remember?’

“A life full of memories is a life well lived — and here we are, dancing in a circle, making another.

“There are so many parts of this venture that call me out, or draw me in: building our own houses, with such care for energy and how they are arranged in community; planning a community kitchen and gardens; low- or no-fossil fuel heating and net-zero electric. I admit, I am also a fan of goats.

“It is probably just that challenge — to learn more about everything — that is the greatest fun. And the most to learn of all is not about walls and windows: instead, it is learning the art of working and living together, how to give ourselves to something larger than the Self… every meeting, every conflict resolved, every labor shared, I am that much more certain how right this path is.”
